The Vatican is celebrating the European Year of European Heritage by highlighting the Laocoon group, a famous ancient Greek sculpture in the Holy See's collections.
The coin shows the statue of Laocoon and his sons, also known as the Laocoon Group, a fundamental work of ancient Greece for sculpture throughout the world and for the Vatican Museums. The name of the issuing country "Città del Vaticano" is engraved in the lower centre. From left to right, the inscription "Anno Europeo Del Patrimonio Culturale" (European Year of Cultural Heritage) can be seen in a semi-circle. The year of issue "2018" and the mint mark "R" are in the top right-hand corner. The artist's name "D. LONGO".
