This year, the Vatican is commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Padre Pio's death. During his pastoral visit to San Giovanni Rotondo in March, Pope Francis highlighted the legacy left by the Saint of Pietrelcina: the prayer groups, the House for the Relief of Suffering and the confessional. 

For the Holy Father, this legacy evokes prayer, lowliness and the wisdom of life. We must pray like Saint Pio," says the Pope, "without ever growing weary, because we cannot know the Father without opening ourselves up to praise, without devoting time to Him alone, without adoring Him. Like the Capuchin friar, we must look at the wounds of our neighbours and overcome the culture of waste, because Jesus also gave priority to the little ones. There is no room for God in people who are full of themselves. Finally, like Padre Pio, we must fight evil wisely: with humility, with obedience, with the cross, offering up our pain for love. "So let us imitate Padre Pio and not merely admire him.
