In 1976, to commemorate the bicentenary of the United States, was issued the series including: the Washington district, the Kennedy half dollar and the Eisenhower dollar. Each coin features the standard presidential bust on the obverse with a newly designed backhand: a colonial drummer on the neighborhood, Independence Hall on the half dollar and the super-imposed Liberty Bell on an image of the moon on the dollar. In addition, the three coins were doubly dated 1776-1976, marking the first time an American circulation coin was minted with two dates.
