On 5 September, the Republic of San Marino is issuing a €2 2023 commemorative coin to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Luca Signorelli.
Luca Signorelli is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Italian Renaissance painting. Born in Cortona between 1441 and 1445, he studied for a long time in Arezzo in the studio of Piero Della Francesca. Thanks to his early works on sacred subjects, he took part in decorating the sacristy of the sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto and, at the dawn of his thirties, the Sistine Chapel, first as Perugino's assistant, then as the titular artist. The "tondi with Madonnas", now exhibited in the world's most prestigious galleries, are famous. The angel depicted on the coin is taken from "Blessed in Paradise", a fresco painted around 1500-1504 in the Chapel of San Brizio (Cappella Nova) in Orvieto Cathedral. After a rich artistic life, in which he also devoted some time to a political career, Signorelli died in 1523 in his native Cortona.
56,000 copies were issued and minted by the Italian Monetary Institute.
Edge: striated and inscribed with a 2 followed by a star, all repeated six times, alternating obverse and reverse.
