The coin depicts a magnificent view of Venice, taken from the work ‘Veduta del bacino di San Marco dalla Punta della Dogana’ by Canaletto (1740-1745), kept at the Brera art gallery. The artist was one of the leaders of the veduta genre, which enjoyed exceptional international success in the eighteenth century and found its greatest expression in depictions of the lagoon city: now the symbol of the rich and serene city, Venice was immortalised in the splendour of its palaces and the grandeur of its churches overlooking the water, in a timeless atmosphere illuminated by a typical, sparkling light. The use of the ‘camera ottica’ is specific to Canaletto's pictorial practice.
