As part of the Idols of Sport series, which pays tribute to the great figures of national sport, this year sculptor João Cutileiro presents a piece dedicated to Rosa Mota, Olympic and world champion in one of athletics' most emblematic disciplines, the marathon. Rosa Mota entered the history books of world athletics when she ran and won the first official women's marathon in 1982 in Greece, using the original route run by Phidipedes between Athens and Marathon in 490 BC, thus putting an end to the taboo that women's bodies and organisms did not allow them to run distances of over 3,000 metres. With an enviable record, including a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and a world championship in Rome in 1987, as well as three European championships, ?our Rosinha?, as she is affectionately known by many Portuguese, continues to be a source of pride and admiration for many generations.
