The Church of the Holy Sepulchre or Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Basilica of the Resurrection or Agia Anastasis (?Holy Resurrection?) by Eastern Christians, is a Christian church located in the Christian quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. This basilica has been venerated by Catholics and Orthodox on pilgrimage since the 4th century, and at the beginning of the 21st century it welcomed over a million pilgrims a year out of the 1.9 million visitors to Israel. According to tradition, this shrine encompasses the site of the crucifixion (Golgotha), as well as the grotto where Christ's body was laid to rest after his death (the Holy Sepulchre or tomb of Jesus).
The church is a highly symbolic place, hosting the worship services of several different Christian denominations. All these communities are protected by the status quo of the holy places. It is also one of the seats of the Armenian and Orthodox Patriarchates of Jerusalem.
