In this fable, perhaps Aesop's best-known, a hare is constantly making fun of a tortoise for being too slow. One day, the tortoise, tired of seeing the hare showing off, challenged him to a race, which the hare accepted. The tortoise set off, advancing slowly but surely. The hare soon left the tortoise behind and, confident of his victory, took a nap in the middle of the race. When he woke up, he realised that his competitor, who had been crawling slowly but surely, had arrived before him. The moral of this fable is that diligence and perseverance can win out over talent when the latter does not work hard.
