Initiated in 2017 the Aviation and History collection this year honours the Curtiss P-40.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was the third most produced fighter aircraft in the United States during the Second World War. It first flew in 1938 and remained the only valid fighter available in large numbers in the American air force until 1943. It served very honourably throughout most of the war, thanks to its low cost, ease of maintenance and great robustness.
The front of this coin shows it in combat over a rice field against a Japanese aircraft, symbolising its involvement in the Pacific during the Second World War.
The reverse of the series features two pilot profiles symbolising different eras and types of use, civil and military. Numerous aircraft are represented in the sky, also marking different eras and uses, a tribute to the history of aviation.
Pilot and comic strip author Romain Hugault, who specialises in aviation, once again collaborated with Joaquin Jimenez, master engraver at the Monnaie de Paris, to create this new series of gold and silver coins.
