Bringing together the greatest international motor racing teams, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race consists of an endurance event in which drivers take it in turns day and night for 24 hours to cover the greatest possible distance on the Sarthe circuit. Created in 1923, this race has been a major driving force behind technical progress in both racing cars and mass production. 100 years after the first edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours, the world's greatest endurance event is celebrating 100 years of speed and performance. To mark this centenary, Monnaie de Paris is paying tribute to this legendary competition by creating a brand new trophy and minting a collection of gold and silver coins.
The face of this collector coin features two racing cars taking part in a 24-hour stopwatch. The reverse polishing on the top of the coin differentiates between day and night, adding contrast and depth. The headlights of the vehicle driving at night highlight the "100" of the centenary of the 24 H of Le Mans while illuminating the track of this edition of the competition.
The reverse features two portraits of drivers facing each other. The face on the left evokes a driver from the early 20th century taking part in the first edition of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's endurance grand prix, while the face on the right marks the evolution of a century of motor racing. The layout of the 24 Hours circuit acts as a mirror, a window opening onto the past but also onto the future.
