The Third Republic was the republican regime in force in France from 1870 to 1940. After the Capetian monarchy (802 years) it is the longest political regime that France has known. Besides this long duration (nearly 70 years) the Third Republic is the regime that allowed the republic to settle permanently in the political history of France after the first two failures (1792 and 1848). Thanks to it, the republican regime gradually gained legitimacy among the conservative right and royalism declined considerably.
