In 2021 the Monnaie de Paris inaugurates a new series around literary styles and authors who have marked the history of literature in France and abroad. Each year, a literary style will be highlighted, such as poetry, novels, philosophical essays or even theatre. A French author and a foreign author who have left their mark on the literary style being honoured that year will then be celebrated.

On this side, the engraving workshop of the Monnaie de Paris has represented the portrait of Jean de la Fontaine from the front.
The most famous animals of his fables are represented: the raven and the fox, the ant, the wolf and the lamb and finally the hare and the tortoise encircling his face.
His name and the dates of his birth and death are engraved on the right of the decoration. The word 400 years refers to the commemoration in 2021 of 400 years since his birth.

The reverse of this coin is the common reverse for all commemorative €Gold and Silver coins minted by the Monnaie de Paris.
