"Fish money" is a term used to describe a particular type of ancient currency used in certain cultures. This concept often refers to objects in the shape of fish or featuring representations of fish that were used as a medium of exchange.
Fish-shaped currencies have been used in different parts of the world and at different times. One of the most famous uses of "fish money" dates back to antiquity, in China, where bronze fish-shaped objects were used as currency during the Zhou Dynasty (770-221 BC).
These bronze fish-shaped objects often had a small loop or hole at one end, which allowed them to be tied together to facilitate their transport and storage. Although these "fish money" are not always considered currencies in the modern sense of the term (they were not necessarily minted or regularly issued by a central government), they were used as a medium of exchange in commercial transactions and played an important role in the economy of the time.
Outside of China, fish-shaped currencies or those featuring fish representations have also been used in other ancient cultures, although specific details may vary depending on the region and period.
