Description

1st estampa.

Dom Pedro II was the second and last Emperor of Brazil, reigning from 1831 to 1889. He was born on December 2, 1825, and was the son of Dom Pedro I, the founder of the Brazilian Empire. Dom Pedro II became emperor at the age of five following his father's abdication.

During his reign, Dom Pedro II played a significant role in Brazilian history. His rule was marked by social, political, and economic reforms and developments. He favored the abolition of slavery in Brazil, although it was only achieved after his downfall.

Dom Pedro II was known for his passion for education and culture. He encouraged the growth of literature, science, and the arts in Brazil, contributing to the country's intellectual development. His imperial court was a hub of creativity and intellectual exchange.

However, over the years, the Brazilian Empire faced increasing social, political, and economic issues. The abolition of slavery in 1888 was followed by discontent among agrarian elites who depended on slave labor. In 1889, a military coup overthrew Dom Pedro II and proclaimed the Republic in Brazil.

After his overthrow, Dom Pedro II lived in exile in Europe until his death in 1891. Despite the end of the empire, he remained an iconic figure in Brazilian history, being seen as an enlightened monarch and a fervent promoter of culture and education.
